A comprehensive guide to making photographs with handheld light, movement, and long exposure.
Developed from years of work in the field, Outdoor Light-Painting Photography: The Essential Field Guide distills Eric Paré and Kim Henry's approach into a single book. It is designed as both an introduction for those new to the medium and a working reference for photographers looking to expand their practice.
The book approaches light painting as a photographic discipline: one that depends on timing, location, camera control, physical movement, and a precise understanding of how light behaves in a scene. The result is a practical guide built for real conditions, from first experiments after dark to advanced outdoor scenarios. Through clear explanations and stunning imagery, Eric and Kim reveal how simple tools like a flashlight and a plastic tube can create breathtaking results when combined with long-exposure photography.
Inside, readers will find:
- Guidance on camera setup, equipment, and the foundations of the technique
- Location-based approaches for beaches, forests, cityscapes, star trails, aurora nights, and more
- Insights into composition, light shapes, workflow, and tools.
- Post-processing walkthroughs and practical reference tables designed for use in the field
- Insights drawn from more than a decade of professional practice and teaching

About the authors
ERIC PARÉ & KIM HENRY are a Canadian creative duo internationally recognized for their pioneering approach to photography and light painting. For over a decade, they have cultivated a distinctive practice and built a body of work that is both technically refined and emotionally resonant, amassing more than a million followers across their social media channels along the way.
Their work has been featured by global platforms such as CNN, MTV, and the BBC, and they've contributed to major campaigns for Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, Canon, Intel, and others. Exploring the world with their light-painting tubes, they create striking imagery that merges light, movement, and landscape in extraordinary locations. As dedicated educators, they do annual workshops and lead learning groups, sharing their techniques openly, fostering a vibrant and worldwide community.
When not traveling, they work alongside their team in their Montreal studio, using a 176-camera 360° system and a 200-camera 3D scanner to capture dance in ways few others can. This balance between outdoor exploration and high-tech studio production allows them to continually push creative boundaries.
